dungeon defender

Remember Dungeon Keeper ? I was fascinated by that game and think it was one of the better games by Peter Molyneux and his company Bullfrog long before he decided to make shitty games that promised much but could not live up to those promises.

Dungeon Defender reminds me of that game because you do take the role of a dungeon overlord defending your home against invading raid parties. You’re not doing that alone of course and can build creature dwellings like Manticore or Vampire Lairs which patrol a certain area around their lairs and attack enemy raid parties automatically.

Add to that a fine selection of the deadliest traps and support buildings and you pretty much got a game that plays like Dungeon Keeper 2D. The avatar, or overlord, can be selected from three villains including an Evil Wizard, a Death Knight and a Chaos Ranger each with their own feats and special buildings.

The characters gain levels while fighting enemies which make them more powerful. Sometimes items of different quality are dropped by the enemies which can be equipped. Wow players will love to go hunting for legendary items and even artifacts.

Most of the space of each map is filled by solid stone which can be removed by your imp (sorry Peon) workforce to make space for additional buildings. They can also be used to gather ore veins to add money to your war efforts.

One nice aspect of the game is the skill tree. The player can select skills from time to time that make this creatures or himself more powerful or improve the traps that can be build.

The game without doubt has some shortcomings namely the music that sounds very repetitive; As is the gameplay because frankly not much is excitingly new is happening after the first few maps that introduce the various creature buildings and possibilities.

monsters den

Monsters’ Den: Book of Dread is actually the second installment in the Monsters’ Den series. Both games have been published at Kongregate and are a huge success if you consider the rating and games played so far.

Monsters’ Den is a tactical roleplaying game, or a roleplaying game with turn based combat whichever you like more. Your party of four, made up of standard roleplaying characters like the warrior, cleric, mage or ranger has to clear level by level of the game

Each level is made up of rooms and hallways that are connected to each other. The basic goal of each level is to find the stair that leads to the next level. The party can find treasure, healing and enemies in the various rooms which drop loot after defeating them

Combat is turn based and every character has the option to attack, pause, use an item or a special ability. A mage for example can attack with his staff (one enemy), a fireball (one to four enemies) or try to freeze an enemy character.

With each passing level the characters advance as well which makes them stronger. The player can pick new skills and increase the four primary stat strength, endurance, dexterity and intellect which all have a direct effect on certain powers and abilities.

Monsters’ Den Book of Dread is an interesting game that will appeal to players who like turn based combat and roleplaying games. It becomes a little bit repetitive after a while but the quest for powerful items will be enough to keep players going, especially those WOW players when WOW is in maintenance mode.

Sonny - I did read Sony at the beginning - is a turn based role playing browser game. The player is taking role of a character named Sonny who wakes up on a ship resurrected as a Zombie. Not your usual no-brain Zombie, one that actually can select a class at the beginning ranging from Assassin to Gunslinger. It is the players task to escape from the ship and make his way from there to meet his destiny.

The player is guided by the blind Louis at the beginning who acts like a tutor explaining the general game mechanics. The game starts with a combat. Each combatant has one action each combat round that can be either an offensive or defensive action. Depending on the class certain special attacks or spells are available that can be cast at opponents or party members.

Each character possesses a certain amount of hitpoints and spell points which are also used for special attacks. Once the hitpoints reach 0 the character is taken out of combat. The goal is to beat all opponents before they beat you.

sonny combat

A character gains experience points after each combat. A new level increases the characters stats and awards him with one ability and one attribute point that can be used to give the character new spells, increase spells already learned and add one point to one of the four attributes.

sonny level up

The player has time to rest after each combat. There are also opportunities to buy new items in a shop that increase attributes, attack and defense. Those items are limited to certain player levels and cost money that the player earns by defeating (and looting) enemies.

A great feature is the ability to respec the character at any given time which essentially removes and spend attribute and ability points so that they can be assigned again. The attributes have obviously certain effects not only on player stats but also on special attacks.

sonny story

Cutscenes as well as ingame conversations narrate the story of the game. Story, graphics and music are well done and add to the game experience.

Once the character beats the first enemies on the ship he proceeds on land by using a map that connects the different areas of the game.

Sonny is a well done game, some would even say exceptional for a browser game. If you like roleplaying and turn based strategy games then you should definitely check out this game.
