postal 2

I was never a huge fan of the Postal games nor the abyssal movie directed by Uwe Boll who is known for creating computer games into extraordinary bad movies. In a move to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Postal series the team decided to release the multiplayer part of the game Postal 2 Share The Pain.

The game features 14 multiplayer maps, 25 playable characters, 4 different gametypes and 11 crazy weapons. The download is available at Filefront and has a size of roughly 600 Megabytes.

This looks like a similar move to Sierra’s move to offer the multiplayer part of their shooter Fear for free. Downloads are a bit slow currently with roughly 300 Kilobyte per second which could be due to many users downloading the game at once from Filefront.

I cannot really say much about the game because I have not played it at all. Wikipedia has the following information on the game:

Postal² is a 2003 American computer game by Running With Scissors (RWS). It is a sequel to the 1997 game Postal. Both are intentionally highly controversial due to high levels of violence and stereotyping. Unlike its predecessor, Postal² is a first-person shooter based on the Unreal Graphics Engine.

It’s definitely not a game suited for minors and parents should take care that such a game does not get in the hands of their kids.

Remember the game Archon ? I played it extensively on my Commodore 64 and loved it, especially the fact that you could play the game against the computer or a friend on the same computer. Archon: The Light and the Dark, that’s the original title of the game, resembled chess at first glance. Two sides, dark and light, compete on a chess board against each other. Even some of the figures on the board resembled chess pieces.

But that’s where the similarities end. Besides the black and white squares the game also features gray squares and five power points which added interesting strategic possibilities. Unlike chess combat was not instantly decided but had to be fought out. Both creatures competed in action paced combat against each other.

The real beauty of the system was that the different creatures had different abilities. While a knight was able to slash with his sword a Valkyrie could shoot with her bow and hit the enemies from a distance. Hitpoints, Attacks and movement speed where different for each creature and while stronger creatures normally won against weaker ones the outcome was different from time to time.

Combat was also influenced by the squares the creatures were fighting on. A dark square would favor dark creatures with additional hitpoints and strength while a light square would favor the light side and gray squares would favor none.

The game can be won by holding all five power points, imprisoning the last enemy creature or eliminating all enemy creatures on the board. A tie was possible as well if the last two creatures on board knocked out each other in the last game.

Archon Evolution is a remake of the classic game. The game is not completely finished yet which unfortunately includes the single player mode of the game. The game mode that is working perfectly however is the 2 player hotseat mode which provides all the fun that I need. I always enjoyed it more to bash my friends than to bash the computer.

The controls are WASD and left Shift for Player 1 and the arrow keys and right-shift for Player 2.

Want a surprisingly simple but yet addictive game ? Typeracer is a multiplayer game that is played in the web browser. In it you race against other players with your car from the start to the finish line. How do you race you ask ? Well, not with the arrow keys.

You race by typing in the words of a paragraph that is displayed below the race, hence the name Typeracer. The race normally consists of two to four sentences that have to be typed word by word. The wpm - word per minute - score of every player is constantly updated and the progress is also visible by the moving cars.

The maximum number of players that I raced against was six but I’m not sure if that is the maximum. A wpm score of 50 to 60 usually gives you a good chance of winning the game.

Your skill level is displayed in the top right corner, it does change after each race that you drive. It is possible to contribute quotes to the game and practice alone before you race against other players.
